Before we get into our “animal sightings” I want to tell you
that we have learned a new term in the past week, since we decided to do our
safari. The phrase is “The Big
Five”. Evidently this term is known
worldwide to anyone who knows anything about safaris and viewing animals. The Big Five include elephants, Rhinos,
African Buffaloes, Lions and Leopards.
Everyone dreams of seeing these big five on a safari, but it is very
rare to have that opportunity. Most
people don’t see all of them, even if they are on safari for a month. I can’t begin to tell you how these Big Five
are honored on posters, shirts, statues, curios, etc throughout the southern
countries in Africa that have these wild animals. Therefore, I suppose that we subconsciously
joined the rest of the world in hoping to see as many as possible. I was also very excited to see Hippos, Zebras
and Giraffes. They became our own Big
Eight!
